We adore Cobertor from Retrosaria Rosa Pomar. This very special and durable yarn is most commonly used in the manufacturing of traditional Portuguese baby blankets but can be used for other warm, thick, outerwear garments as well as in the Oxford Punch Tool for rug hooking! Cobertor is made from Churra wool, from indigenous breeds and chosen for the length and thickness of its fibers.
Blanket is the yarn used for manufacturing the traditional Portuguese pap blankets. It's spun from the fleece of native long wool sheep breeds. Papa blankets are used documented since the mid 16th century and they are to this day by many shepherds of Guarda. These blankets have a distinctive faux fur look, which is obtained through fulling and teaseling. The dense nap raised on both sides creates an exceptionally warm blanket. This same look and feel can be achieved on knitted garments made with a yarn blanket by gently teaseling them with a flick carder or dog slicker.
Retrosaria Rosa Pomar makes minimally processed heritage wool yarns from Portugal. Their yarns are created in collaboration with small manufacturers, breeders associations, and shepherds. All Rosa Pomar yarns are non-superwash, not bleached, have no silicone-based softeners, and mulesing is not practiced in Portugal.
