Established in 1861, Van Buren is the only sheepskin tannery in the Netherlands. Focused on sustainability, quality and durability, Van Buren offers natural colored (these ones are mottled with lovely color variations!) undyed sheepskins produced in an environmentally friendly way. Sheepskins are a byproduct of the meat industry and have no real value until they are tanned.; sheep used to make sheepskins are not slaughtered for their skin (actually, only 0.045% of sheepskins are tanned and make useful ... the rest are waste). In using the sheepskins, we are supporting the use of the entire animal. Sheepskins are also entirely biodegradable, unlike products made of synthetic materials, and do not sit in a landfill for hundreds of years after being discarded!
Van Buren has used traditional tanning processes for over 150 years. Their hides are hand-selected and available in natural shades; only the highest quality sheepskins pass their selection process. These particular hides come from the Dutch Texel sheep, which have a beautiful volume and offer great warmth and comfort. Given that sheepskins are natural products, there are no standard sizes. This listing is for sheepskins in the 40"-43.5" (100cm-110cm size range.
